Two politicians from India’s reigning party were set to be disciplined on Thursday (March 7) after a fight using a shoe as an armament went viral on social media.
The episode on Wednesday (March 6) has brought humiliation to the Bharatiya Janata Party led Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a nation where footwear is considered impure and deploying one as a weapon is seen as particularly offensive.
Footage of the brutal exchange in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, dubbed the “shoe brawl” by Indian media, displays MP Sharad Tripathi thrashing state assembly member Rakesh Singh Baghel with his footwear after a disagreement over the placement of names on a foundation stone for a new project. Both the policymakers Tripathi and Baghel have accepted that they are at fault and have apologized ever since.
The BJP’s leader in Uttar Pradesh, M.N. Pandey, held that both lawmakers had been beckoned to the state capital Lucknow and that “stern disciplinary action will be taken”.
